SITEKI – Two pupils have died at Ngomane High School over the past three weeks and this has reportedly left both pupils and teachers traumatised.

Information gathered is that both pupils were in the same class.
The first pupil reportedly died early this month following a short illness. He was a male and hailed from Lomahasha. The second pupil, a girl, died in the early hours of Monday last week following an illness. Her relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that she had been diagnosed with a liver disease.

“It appears she consumed a poisonous substance because her eyes turned yellowish before she passed on. There was massive swelling on her stomach and her whole body turned yellowish, like an orange,” said the relative.

The pupil was laid to rest over the past weekend. A memorial service was held at the school last Friday. Meanwhile, classes were reportedly suspended at the school last Monday following the death of the second pupil. However, it was gathered that learning had since resumed at the school.

When sought for comment last Thursday, Head teacher at the school, Nompumelelo Dlamini, was brief in her response. “I’m sorry, I will not comment. These are sensitive matters. We respect the families and feelings of the pupils,” she said before dropping her phone. Lubombo Regional Education Officer (REO) Wellington Mdluli said the deaths of the two pupils were reported to his office and he was told the pupils died after falling sick. Mdluli said the suspension of classes was a normal practice.

“Sometimes, some pupils are disturbed when they are informed about the death of their colleague, especially the one that they were very close to. Teachers are then forced to suspend classes so that pupils can deal with the situation,” said Mdluli.
Ngomane High School produced the best pupil in the Lubombo region in the 2015 Form V examination.
