MBABANE – Jabulani Nxumalo of the Federation of Swaziland Trade Unions (FESWATU) says his organisation was in support of the idea to have the kingdom removed from the ILO Special Paragraph, despite the tough opposition they faced.

ILO is the International Labour Organisation.
Situations of special concern are highlighted in special paragraphs of the ILO General Report.
The conference was held between May 30, 2016 and June 10, 2016.

Nxumalo said he and Mashumi Shongwe, as executives of FESWATU, urged the Southern African Trade Union Council (SATUC) to help Swaziland come out of the ILO Special Paragraph.

He said it was not true that Shongwe and himself gate-crashed the meeting as they had been officially invited by SATUC to attend. He said as a team, they were able to make prudent arguments to persuade attendees of the meeting to consider taking the country out of the special paragraph.
Swaziland’s presentations were made on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.

Swaziland was placed in the dreaded special paragraph last year.
Nxumalo said the meeting began with the reports from the various SADC countries and was followed by comments.
He said after Shongwe made the plea for the country to be removed from the special paragraph, he (Nxumalo) immediately took to the podium to second him.

He said he continued to inform SATUC that the unfulfilled ILO benchmarks were legislative in nature but were being debated in the Parliament of Swaziland.
