SIDVOKODVO – At least one woman died and seven others sustained serious injuries when a 14-seater Toyota Quantum overturned near Usuthu Bridge in Sidvokodvo yesterday morning.

The minibus overturned after colliding with a sedan, just after crossing the bridge around 10:15am.
The deceased’s age is estimated to be around 50. At the scene of the accident, there was a smell of alcohol. This is not to suggest that the influence of alcohol might have been the cause of the accident.
The 14-seater Toyota Quantum, heading towards Nhlangano, was overtaking several vehicles when it collided with the sedan travelling on the opposite lane.

It overturned on the left side of the lane to Sidvokodvo.
While the driver hastily applied brakes, in an apparent effort to avoid the accident, the minibus skidded, instantly creating a pothole on the road.
One of the passengers was reportedly in a critical condition.

At least eight passengers were admitted to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital in Manzini. This includes the one in a critical situation and the seven others who sustained serious injuries. Three passengers were treated and discharged.  The driver of the Toyota Quantum was also seriously injured.  There were 14 passengers aboard the minibus.

Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer, confirmed the accident.
She said the police were still investigating the cause of the accident, which claimed the life of the woman who occupied the back seat.
Traffic police officers were preparing to keep the clothes of the injured passengers in a safe place when the Times SUNDAY arrived at Sidvokodvo Police Station at 2pm.
