MBABANE – Civil servants are vacating government houses as they target the maximum E4 000 housing allowance, a statement has alleged.

The statement is part of a warning that is being issued to civil servants on social networking platform, WhatsApp. A member, who is believed to be privy to discussions between labour unions and the Joint Negotiations Forum (JNF), noted that civil servants were beginning to vacate their accommodation to benefit from the perks outlined in the salary review report.

Aubrey Sibiya, the President of the National Public Service and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU), suspected that the member who released the information was privy to the ongoing roundtable negotiations. Also in the statement, the member identified himself as someone who was in the leadership.

The statement noted that civil servants were deserting institutional houses and those of government following that many suspected that they would soon get the housing allowance. “Due to the aforementioned misconception, one has it in authority that some cadres are now beginning to work out means of vacating institutional houses and those of government because they think we are soon to get the housing allowance.

“The truth of the matter is, government has stated, in no uncertain terms, that it has no money for all allowances and, therefore, awards us a 0 per cent increment on same,” reads the statement in part.

In elaborating the need for the statement, the civil servant said the  WhatsApp post was going to be the basis of their arguments as they interrogate the status of the salary review negotiations.
