MBABANE – A soccer player was killed in violent clashes during Hhukwini Member of Parliament (MP) Saladin Magagula’s soccer tournament.
The deceased soccer player was also employed by the Swaziland National Fire and Emergency Services department.

The fight between Muziwendonda Mavuso, the fire employee, who was playing for Top Centre Football club and a fan, ensued after the game between the former’s team and another team playing under the MP’s tournament, known as Ematfombeni Mdzimba League.

Information gathered is that the fireman was stoned by the fan, while the sponsor (MP) was presenting medals to the team that won the league.
The attack happened after the last game of the tournament, which was played at Hhukwini Sports Ground, when the teams and the fans were headed to a grocery shop where the presentation of the prizes was held. While the MP was awarding the team, a short argument is said to have ensued between Mavuso and the fan, which resulted in the fatal attack.  MP Magagula confirmed the incident.

He attributed the scenario to bad luck, saying nobody knew the bone of contention that resulted in the player being killed.
“This is an unfortunate situation and I do not know where to start talking about it. We do not know what exactly happened between the fans. We heard that a fan stoned another after a short argument while we were awarding the teams,” Magagula said.
The MP was interviewed before it was ascertained that the deceased was actually a player not a fan.

Magagula said the incident had nothing to do with the games that were being played on the day, because all the teams that took part in the league were at the shop waiting for their awards.
The MP sent his condolences to the teams that play under the league, fans and the family of the deceased for the dark cloud that befell them.
“It is sad that while we are trying to promote sports in our constituencies such a calamity befell us,” the MP said.
