NOW POLICE CHIEF DESCRIBES UNIONISM AS ‘ISHISHI’

PIGG’S PEAK – National Commissioner of Police Isaac Magagula has insisted that there was no place for a union in the police service.
On Wednesday, Magagula was reported as having referred to unionism in the police service as lamlambo.

Magagula’s latest stand follows comments made by some police officers at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station. This, however, did not imply that all the officers had the same view towards the national commissioner’s statement. Yesterday, the national commissioner reiterated his statement. He said lamlambo was an understatement and said the best word to describe unionism in the police service was ‘ishishi’.
He said ishishi referred to a taboo.

“We do not want unions in the police force,” said Magagula.
He said the police service was not prepared to go back to a system of unionism which almost ruined the service.  The national commissioner said unions in the police service would bring disorder.
He said police officers belonged to a disciplined force which did not entertain disorder.

“The unionism spirit is at variance with the culture, practices and code of conduct, which have sustained the organisation for many many years; in other words unions seem to advocate kuphindzilitana, which is unacceptable in a disciplined organisation,” said Magagula.

He insisted that for now, the Royal Swaziland  Police service  was not ready to have union movements within its ranks and file structure. The national commissioner said police officers could behave like the way other workers behaved.
“Our environment cannot allow for unionism,” said Magagula.
He emphasised that it was fine for police officers to have a police association but not a union.

How on earth can you call our union "lamlambo" and "ishishi" Mr Commissioner. That is totally unlike you Mthombeni, a man I have respected. Are you aware that your statement is not only directed to the Police Union but to all Unions that exists. What us said in your official capacity as the country's National Commissioner of Police is an insult to the those who appointed you and the nation at large.

If Unions are bolamlambo how are you going to work with them as citizen of the country, do you expect them to help you in fighting crime in the country? If they bring a report to your office do you want us to believe that justice will be done? All along have you been treating fairly in their matters? Do you think we will regain AGOA under this situation? My guess is a big NO.

Mr Commissioner you are acting like an expired food on the shelves of a supermarket which is dangerous to the people of this country. You sound like an old man who no longer thinks before making a statement. If I were you I would be asking for the appointing authority to allow me to retire with dignity so that young and energetic blood can lead the Police Service.
