MANZINI – As South Africans enjoyed and celebrated Freedom Day yesterday, it was not the case with Swazi truck driver, Sanele May, who killed 23 people during the Fields Hill, Pinetown crash, as his relatives and friends could not see him.

According to the founder of the Sanele May Support Group, Peach Piche, they took the opportunity to have a public holiday yesterday and headed down to Umzinto Prison with lots of ‘goodies’ to give to Sanele, however, they spent almost the whole day waiting for the prison officials to call them. This was after they had been informed that they would not be allowed in as there was a roll call for all prisoners.

“We left early as we had to be back this afternoon for a funeral. We excitedly headed down to Umzinto with loads of goodies, a choice of two meals, fish and chips, a slap up breakfast as I wondered when last Sanele had bacon, egg, mushrooms, fried onions, sausage, beans and toast,” Peache said on the Facebook page.

Peache added that they also had biltong, a lunch bar, two litres of mango and orange juice and he had a buffet to choose from. The members of the group also revealed that they had bought him a lot of socks for winter and toiletries, which included zambuk, soap, deodorant, after shave and ear buds, to mention but a few.

“There were all his newspapers and reading material as well as a carton of cigarettes which he uses to trade inside the prison. Off we went, chuffed and really excited to see him. Imagine our devastation when we arrived at the prison early and were told they were doing a roll call. Really? Surely no one has escaped and they know everyone there? By 11am, we were still no closer to seeing Sanele and the prison officials could not tell us how much longer it would take. Surely, they could do this on a day that was not a public holiday visitor day?” Peache added.

She also revealed that they felt torn as they had come all the way and they were excited and Sanele knew that they were coming to visit him. Peache added that they even tried waiting under the shade of trees, however, they were chased. “We also sat outside on the wall but had to move. We then waited back in our car, however, there was still no word on when we could visit. Hours passed. My heart sank and I asked if there was any way we could leave all the goodies for Sanele but there was no guarantee that he would get them and further, they told us that they were not allowed to accept parcels. With very heavy hearts, we eventually had to leave Umzinto prison armed with all our parcels and devastated we never got to see Sanele,” Peache said.
She mentioned yesterday that she was desperately looking at her phone screen waiting for Sanele to contact her.
“We tried Sanele, we were there and so excited. Chin up though - we will see you real soon,” Peache said.
