MBABANE – In a movie-like scene, three hooded men stormed into an MTN outlet in Simunye brandishing a pellet gun and ordered employees and some customers, who were inside, to surrender money.

The employees were held hostage for a while as the gunmen searched for money and valuable items inside the outlet.
The incident happened last Thursday, just hours before close of business.

The gunmen are said to have acted violently and threatened to shoot the traumatised employees should they not heed their demands.
Fearing for their lives, some of the employees lifted their hands as a sign of compliance to the orders of the thugs, while others had to lie down on the floor.

A source close to the matter said there was little time to take action and call the police as the gunmen seemed to have planned their attack as they sped off immediately after the incident.
The thugs made away with E121 391 in cash and cellphones worth E9 140.
When sought for comment, MTN Head of Corporate Service Sibusiso Nhleko confirmed the matter.

Investigations

“We acknowledge receipt of your enquiry. We can confirm that there was an incident at our outlet in Simunye. However, we are not in a position to provide further details at this stage as the police are still conducting their investigations,” said Nhleko.
Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter.
Vilakati said the information she received was that the members of gang were six and that the police have arrested four, while two still remain at large.
However, she said only three entered at the Simunye MTN outlet during the robbery.
“Police have recovered E44 000 from the suspects that were arrested for attacking the MTN employees. We are still working around the clock to bring the others to book.
“We also appeal to members of the public to assist the police if they know of the whereabouts of the remaining suspects who are on the run,” Vilakati said.
