MPOLONJENI – Mpolonjeni Inkhundla in the Lubombo region was also not spared from the mass destruction caused by the storm that wreaked havoc in some parts of the country last Thursday.

According to statistics released by Mpolonjeni Member of Parliament (MP) Jacob Siwela, a total of 56 homesteads under the constituency were affected by the storm, which lasted for about 45 minutes.
“The storm destroyed the roofs of 26 homesteads at Mpolonjeni area, 17 homesteads under Ndzangu area, seven homesteads at KaShoba and it also destroyed the roofs of six homesteads situated under Sigcaweni East,” said the legislator who is also a businessman.

MP Siwela revealed that the only area under his constituency that was not hit by the storm was Ngcina, a rural community that lies on the foot of the mountains that separate the Lubombo plateau and the lowveld.
Siwela further stated that, even though the storm caused mass destruction, he was grateful that there were no casualties reported.

“The storm destroyed the roofs, furniture and some other items in most of the affected homesteads. There were no reports of people who were injured by the storm,” he said.
Meanwhile, when this publication visited the affected homesteads on Saturday, all the families appealed for assistance from the public.
Some expressed gratitude to the Swaziland Red Cross Society for providing them with tents.

“I am currently staying with my family in the tent that was donated by Red Cross. I will need to budget for 16 corrugated iron sheets so that I can fix the roof that was destroyed by the storm,” said Hlengiwe Matsebula, whose house had the whole roof blown away by the storm.
She further revealed that she was not at home when the storm struck but her two children were inside the house.

“They miraculously survived as they ran to a neighbour’s home as soon as the roof was blown off by the storm,” she said.
Siphila Shiba, whose brother’s house also had its roof blown off by the storm, said his brother was in South Africa when the storm blew away the roof.
He revealed that he has since called his brother and informed him about the damage that has been caused by the storm.
