MBABANE – PUDEMO President Mario Masuku took time to address the COSATU 12th National Congress while in South Africa for a medical check-up.

PUDEMO is an acronym for the People’s United Democratic Movement and COSATU stands for Congress of South African Trade Unions. The congress is being held in Midrand, Gauteng. According to PUDEMO Secretary General Mlungisi Makhanya, Masuku was in South Africa for a medical check-up yesterday morning when COSATU officials asked him to address the third day of the congress.

Makhanya said Masuku underwent some tests in the morning, and then later on addressed the congress. “He left Swaziland on Tuesday after obtaining an order for the release of his passport on Monday,” Makhanya said.

He said if the preliminary tests were anything to go by, they were worried about the state of the president. He said his blood pressure was high, and his diabetes was getting worse. He said Masuku would return on Saturday. He said they were waiting for the tests, and if they required him to stay longer in Gauteng, they would ask for an extension for the release of his passport in court.

Makhanya said Masuku was being treated by Wits Medical professors.
He said they were humbled by the overwhelming support they were getting from the people and medical practitioners of South Africa. Makhanya said when Masuku came out of prison, his health had deteriorated. He said they had then decided that they would take him to seek medical assistance outside the country.
