FEMALE TEACHERS IN PANTS TURNED BACK AT EDUCATION OFFICES
MBABANE – Female teachers wearing pants are turned back at the Ministry of Education offices.
However, despite this being an old law, some teachers still take chances only to be turned back at the reception for wearing pants.
One primary school teacher was livid when the uncompromising receptionist stopped her dead right on her tracks as she tried to make her way to the stairway of the Teaching Services Commission (TSC) offices.
“You know very well that pants are not allowed,” said receptionist. She tried to reason with him but it all fell on deaf ears. The teacher had to turn back without getting the service she had come for.
Anger was written all over her face.
“I would understand if the offices were inside a royal residence. But no, that is not the case,” she said mumbling away as she disappeared to the scorching sun outside, returning home.
Siphasha Dlamini, sought for comment on the matter, said this was indeed the case.
“This is an old outdated law that we never endorsed. It doesn’t mean that we just take men’s trousers and put them on, no. But Swaziland being patriarchal, men just make laws and impose them on us women. This is the 21 century and it is high time these laws are reviewed,” Dlamini said.
Designed
Dlamini is a head teacher at Sigcaweni High School and also Secretary General of the Swaziland Association of Schools Administrators (SASA).
She further said the trousers women wear were designed for them, not men.
“There are also formal pants which women wear. Go to the High Court, you will find lawyers wearing pants, for example, and it is not an issue.
