DID TAXPAYER PAY FOR TITUS’S LONDON TRIP?

MBABANE – Questions have been raised on whether the taxpayer footed an over E100 000 bill for MP Titus Thwala to attend the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee meeting in London and do nothing.

The Zombodze Emuva Member of Parliament (MP) boarded the same plane with Speaker Themba Msibi to attend the meeting last Thursday.
During the meeting, only one representative was expected and that representative was Msibi as CPA London financed his travel expenses and stay in London, United Kingdom.

Last week, Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini explained why two officers had attended the meeting. He said the explanation was that CPA London had already sent a ticket to Msibi.
“The explanation I got before approving the trip was that the CPA Swaziland Branch sent the notification to the regional office too late to alter the arrangements of the meeting,” said Dlamini.

The regional office in Tanzania was to be notified that Msibi had been removed as the representative following his ousting.
While Msibi’s trip had been funded, questions have risen on whether the taxpayer funded Thwala’s trip. A flight from KMIII International Airport to OR Tambo in South Africa costs around E 2 550, which means a return trip is approximately E5 100.

A connecting flight from OR Tambo to Heathrow International airport in London costs about E36 694.02 in business class.
This means a return trip is E73 388.04 excluding road transport expenses from the airport to the hotel. These expenses exclude accommodation costs and food.
