MBABANE – Four suspects have escaped from police custody by cutting an iron bar in one of the cells.

Among those who escaped is the father of a 13-year-old girl who made headlines for allegedly raping his daughter for over six years and impregnating her.

The other is a kombi driver for whom a police officer recently had to fire warning shots at the busy Mbabane Bus Rank as they tried to apprehend him.

The four are still on the run after breaking out of the Mbabane Police Station. They are believed to have entered the police cells with a hacksaw blade which they used to cut open the iron bar to force their way out. The escape, based on preliminary investigation from close sources, is believed to have been planned.

The rape suspect, the father of the 13-year-old girl, was arrested and appeared before Mbabane Magistrate Court on Friday but will not be named to protect the rape survivor.

The others are; Sikelela Mnisi of Mantjolo (theft of motor vehicle), Sandile Mnisi of Mantjolo (attempted murder, resisting arrest, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one of common assault), and Thulani Dlamini of Mangwaneni (rape). Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Phindile Vilakati confirmed the escape and that police were already out in full force, searching for the suspects.

“We are still investigating how they sneaked in the hacksaw blade into the cells. The four escaped in the wee hours on Saturday, just around 3am,” said Vilakati.
