TWO CONVICTED OF DRIVING SAME CAR

MANZINI – Two men have been arrested for driving the same vehicle under the influence of alcohol and were collectively fined a sum of E9 000.


Sibongakonkhe Nhlanhla Mhlanga (29) of Hlatsi and Thando Dlamini (29) of Pretoria, South Africa were arrested on Saturday morning near the Manzini Satellite Bus Rank.


Mhlanga was slapped with three traffic related counts while Dlamini was charged with only two counts.
On the first count, Mhlanga was charged with drink-driving after he was found driving a car, a VW sedan with registration numbers DN 02 MKGP on the aforesaid place while under the influence of alcohol. On the second count, he was charged for driving through a red traffic light.
On the third count, the accused person was charged for refusing to provide a breath specimen test when ordered to do so by the police.

Meanwhile, Dlamini was charged with drink-driving after he was found occupying the driver’s seat of the same VW sedan and refusing to take a breathalyser test when ordered to do so by the police officers who were on duty.


The duo appeared before Manzini Principal Magistrate David Khumalo on different occasions on Saturday morning and they both opted to conduct their own defence.


Mhlanga was the first one to appear and he pleaded guilty to all the three counts and the court found him guilty as charged and as per the pleas that he tendered before the court.
On the first count, he was sentenced to two years in prison or a E3 000 fine while on the second and third counts he was sentenced to six months in prison or a E800 fine and 1 year in prison or a E2 000 fine, respectively.
