SWAZI CATHOLICS CANNOT REMARRY
MBABANE – The local Roman Catholic Church will not recognise members who are divorced in civil courts and remarry, even though Pope Francis has called on the church to embrace them.
Pope Francis, born Jorgee Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church.
Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor on March 13.
He chose Francis as his papal name, in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Speaking out on one of the most contentious issues of his papacy, Pope Francis on August 5, 2015 issued a powerful call for the church to embrace Catholics who have divorced and remarried.
He told a gathering at the Vatican that such couples “are not excommunicated, and they absolutely must not be treated that way”
“They always belong to the church,” he added, calling priests to welcome Catholics who have remarried without an annulment, even though such Catholics are currently barred, in most cases, from receiving the Eucharist, the central sacrament of the faith.
“The church is called to be always the open house of the Father…no closed doors. No closed doors!” Francis told the crowd at his weekly public audience.
Father Zweli Charles Ngwenya, the Swaziland Roman Catholic Church Coordinator for Social Communications, said on September 8, 2015, Pope Francis announced reforms to the canonical process of marriage annulment.
“He issued a document entitled, “Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus” (The Lord Jesus, Meek Judge).
