MASIBINI – Memories of the Umhlanga tragedy, which sent the whole nation grieving, were relived at the official opening of a huge water project at Masibini, outside Nhlangano yesterday.

The massive and ambitious water supply scheme, which is expected to pump about 20 million litres per day, with a potential to benefit over 100 000 people, was officially opened by His Majesty King Mswati III.

The king talked publicly for the second time about the devastating loss of 13 lives, mainly members of the imbali regiment (maidens) and males who were accompanying them, during a recent accident in Matsapha.

The king praised the maidens, who, in great numbers, continued with the festivities of the Umhlanga ceremony at Ludzidzini Royal Residence, in the face of the predicament.

“I do hope that even with the forthcoming Shiselweni Reed Dance, the regiment will come out in great numbers to attend the ceremony at Mbangweni (royal residence),” he said.

The King spoke about the tragedy as yesterday’s ceremony concluded, but it was also after one traditional leader had touched on the subject.
Mbilaneni traditional leader Chief Malambule Mdluli offered his condolences to His Majesty the King and the entire nation.
He described the deaths of the young maidens as a terrible loss of life.

“My heart goes out to the country’s leadership, their families, and the whole nation which has been united in grief ever since the tragedy struck,” said the chief.
