MBABANE – A government truck transporting over 50 maidens after the conclusion of the reed dance was involved in an accident near Manzana in Mbabane yesterday.

This was the second accident in four days following another accident that claimed 13 lives in Matsapha, Mahhala on Friday. The truck ferrying the maidens back to their respective homes crashed into a sedan but was allowed by the police to leave the scene of the accident as it was getting late for the maidens to reach their homes.

All the parties involved in the accident refused to give full details of what was the exact cause. When this reporter arrived at the accident scene, the driver of the government truck had just finished recording a statement with the Mbabane traffic police officers. When sought for comment, he ignored this reporter and went straight to the truck and drove off with the visibly shaken maidens and their indvuna. The driver of the other car, which was hit by the truck, remained behind recording a statement.

She looked upset and was heard informing the traffic police officers that the accident was caused by a truck which, however, did not stop. She said the truck transporting the maidens was trying to avoid the other truck which did not stop and in the process, it smashed into her car, an Opel Corsa Lite.

The car had its side mirror, driver and passenger doors damaged. After the woman noticed this reporter, she was reluctant to continue recording the statement with the police and they had to move a bit from the scene with the traffic police officer. Her husband, who had arrived on the scene, said they were not willing to comment and even asked that nothing should be reported about the accident.

There were actually three motorists who were at the accident scene, and they were all interviewed by the traffic police officers. However, two of them were later allowed to leave, something which did not go down well with the husband of the woman whose car was hit by the truck transporting the maidens.
