MBABANE – Lobamba Member of Parliament (MP) Michael Masilela told eNews Channel Africa (eNCA) live yesterday that the country had no other modes of transport to ferry maidens but only trucks.

The MP’s interview was aired at about 9:21pm yesterday. The MP told the news anchor that the state of public roads in the country meant only trucks could ferry maidens from the rural areas.

Masilela had apparently called in to clarify the figures but the line of questioning quickly turned and he found himself put on the spot.
He was first asked to clarify whether he was speaking for the government of Swaziland or represented a certain political organisation. His answer was not immediately clear, but later stated that he was speaking as a concerned Swazi citizen.

The legislator said this was because of the state of the roads in the rural areas, hence trucks were the only transport available.
The MP said he wanted to clarify the number of deaths as there were wrong figures that he believed were being thrown around by the Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN).

He said he was not happy as a Swazi and a citizen of this country when someone bad-mouthed the country. Below is the word for word interview between the legislator and the eNCA reporter.

MP: There is something I want to clarify according to the number. There are 13 people who died in the accident. The number of maidens who died on the spot was seven. I am told some of the casualties are those that they took to the hospital, that’s when the number increased. But the stories that we are getting there from that chap Lucky Lukhele in Johannesburg are not accurate.
