MANZINI – Poor sitting arrangements coupled with the scorching sun almost spoilt yesterday’s official opening of this year’s Swaziland International Trade Fair.
The event was graced by His Majesty the King Mswati III.

At around 11am, before the arrival of His Majesty, the East grandstand at the Mavuso Sports Centre was full to capacity.
After being exposed to the sun for about two hours, more than 3 000 people decided to leave the Mavuso Sports Centre while the function was in progress.

The West grandstand, which could have been an option to avoid heat exposure, was never used, for unknown reasons.

When the King addressed the audience at around 3pm, the East grandstand was almost unoccupied.
The more than 3 000 people who had come to witness the opening of the Trade Fair by the King had left.

Gideon Dlamini, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, apologised to the King and the people who crammed the open grandstand, saying government had initially planned to build a temporary roof.
He said they did not have enough time to build the facility; hence they had no option but to ask people to use the uncovered grandstand.

Where His Majesty should have sat, so that the people could use the West grandstand for a better view, there was a marquee which was used as a food serving point for dignitaries.
