MBABANE – The KoNtshingila Royal Kraal, under acting Chief Gelane Zwane, has ordered the closure of a church after its bishop impregnated and married a church member.

The woman, who is now the wife of the bishop, had been the fiancée of a 61-year-old Mozambican man with whom they have five children. The woman was a member of the church under the leadership of the bishop. The woman had been living with her former fiancé in their homestead since 1999.

Residents and church members said they had always known that the woman was involved with the Mozambican as they even had grown children together and had a homestead.
However, things changed when the bishop fell in love with his church member to a point that he impregnated her.
It is alleged that the bishop impregnated the woman while she was still living with the father of her children.

Sought for comment, KoNtshingila Indvuna Mfeneziyam’thoba Magagula confirmed the matter. Magagula said as umphakatsi, they decided to shut down the church because of the bishop’s acts.
“We closed the church in the area. When we first approached him, he vehemently denied that he was having an affair with his church member. He also denied fathering a child with the woman. Later on, he confessed to impregnating the woman. All of a sudden, we heard that he had traditionally married her,” said Magagula.

Magagula said they were against the behaviour of the bishop, as a result, they decided to shut down the church. He said the woman left her fiancé for the bishop.
Magagula said the bishop was a retired deputy head teacher in one of the schools in the Shiselweni region and he now owned a public transport business.

Before the church was shut down, most church members are said to have left the church after their bishop had impregnated the woman. The woman’s former lover discovered that his last born child was not his after he discovered a birth certificate in their house, where under the name of parent, it had the name and surname of the bishop.
The man questioned the mother of his children, who confessed to have been in a secret relationship with the bishop. The man reported the matter to the royal kraal. A letter was also written to the League of Churches which is also dealing with the matter.
