TEACHERS WANT 100% INCREMENT

MANZINI – Teachers believe they are lowly paid and, through their association, the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT), want their salaries increased by up to 100 per cent.

They want government to review their `meagre’ salaries.
The last salary review was done about 10 years ago.

Sikelela Dlamini, the Deputy Secretary General of SNAT, said they wanted teachers’ salaries to be in line with current times.
Dlamini said currently, a teacher with a primary teaching certificate took home approximately E5 000, while a diploma holder earned around E8 000 and a degree holder raked in slightly above E12 000.

“In this day and age, a teacher should not be earning a salary of E5 000.
Imagine; this person has a family to feed. Just recently, fuel prices increased. “So, we hope that the salaries will be increased by 100 per cent, meaning it would be double the current scale. This is because the last review was done in 2004,” he said.

Dlamini explained that the review would not be done in isolations, but compare it to neighbouring countries such as South Africa.
Elaborating, Dlamini said this was because Swaziland was economically depending on South Africa.

He mentioned that their South African counterparts were usually shocked when informed that local teachers who were degree holders took home only E12 000.
