MAHLALINI – A man was brutally killed while two others had to be rushed to hospital after chaos erupted at a tension-filled funeral of a senior member of the Sibandze ruling clan of Mahlalini on Saturday morning.

The funeral mayhem resulted in the delay of the burial of Mjoco Sibandze, a respected member of the clan, who collapsed and died in front of one of his wives at Mthombe area, last week Thursday.

Instead of being buried at around 5:30am, as previously planned, Mjoco’s coffin was lowered at around 11am, following a meeting between elders of the Sibandze clan and the police, who were called to restore order at the chaotic funeral.
Mourners scampered in all directions when an enraged mob assaulted to death a member of the clan at the graveyard in the early morning hours of Saturday during the funeral procession of the late Mjoco.

Police responded to a call at around 2:30am after a member of the clan, Sigwili Sibandze (64), was lynched by an angry mob, largely made up of men, at the graveyard of the Sibandze Royal Kraal at Mahlalini.

Sigwili is the man who caused a stir when he objected to the installation of soccer star Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze as the heir to the Mahlalini chieftaincy in 2013.
This was during a ceremony which was held at the country’s traditional headquarters, Ludzidzini, in June 2013.

Disciplinary action was taken against Sigwili by the Sibandze council after they viewed his stoppage of the soccer star’s blessings by Their Majesties as an embarrassment to the clan.
