MAGUGA – Good things come to those who wait. This old adage held true for national team captain Louis van Zuydam who had to wait for the last 20 minutes of the two-day Maguga Bass Challenge to clinch silverware yesterday.

Previous day’s leader, Dave Wright, who had a catch of 1.404kg, thought he did enough to clinch the title until van Zuydam showed up with a bass weighing 2.747 kg just a few minutes before the 12pm cut-off time yesterday.

Van Zuydam said he just planted his stylish swim swenko bait which mimics a small fish next to the island at the upper side of the dam.
“I knew there was good bass towards the island. I saw the big bass earlier but spent the better part of the day trying to find it,” the proud champion said.

It was the 35-year-old’s first title in the tournament after becoming a runner-up twice.
The seasoned angler also left for South Africa recently where he got a similar prize in almost the same tournament when he weighed a fish of over 4kg.

He had partnered with the equally experienced Manny Rego.
Meanwhile, Wright eventually finished second while Swaziland Angling Association (SAA) President Derek Hopf weighed a bass of 0.742kg to ensure the podium was dominated by the country’s  anglers in yesterday’s tournament.

The champion pocketed a whopping E20 000 as well as an artistic trophy, courtesy of Ngwenya Glass, while the runner-up got half the amount. Prizes were up to the 15th biggest bass while the overall package was E50 000.
