SITEKI – An epileptic man was burnt to death after his house caught fire just before dawn on Friday.

Mduduzi Mkhwanazi (40) of Makhewu, near Good Shepherd Mission in Siteki, was alone inside the house when the tragic accident occurred, his relative said.

It has not yet been established what may have started the fire but it is suspected that the deceased may have experienced epileptic seizures before a lit candle fell on flammable items or clothes.

Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Inspector Phindile Vilakati said Siteki police were still investigating the circumstances around the accident.

Mfanasibili, a brother to the deceased, said he was one of the first people to arrive at the scene.
“He was badly burnt all over the body.
“When we arrived there with the police, we found him dead. We could also not salvage anything from the house as everything was destroyed by the fire,” he said.

He revealed that his brother was a sickly person, who was epileptic.
Mfanasibili further said the deceased lived alone and did not have a wife or children.

Explaining his brother’s last moments, he said Mduduzi had spent the hours before his death at a neighbour’s homestead where he was with other mourners who were preparing for a funeral.
