MBABANE – Government has suspended the quarterly subvention to Swaziland Hospice at Home following an investigation for alleged misappropriation of funds.

Hospice at Home was registered as a non-government organisation in July 1990. The core aim of the hospice is to improve the quality of life for terminally ill people and their families.

The Ministry of Health will ensure that there is an agreement that would be entered into between the Ministry of Health and the Board of Directors of Swaziland Hospice at Home prior to any future disbursements of funds to the organisation.

The decision to suspend the subvention was communicated through a letter dated May 6, 2015 that was copied to the patron of Swaziland Hospice at Home, the chairman of the Board of Directors,  the Accountant General, the Auditor General and the principal secretary in the Prime Minister’s office.

The letter was signed by Dr Simon Zwane, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health.
“Furthermore and seriously disturbing is the discovery that over the past years the organisation has had inadequate internal controls, poor or no relevant accounting records. Based on the findings of the report, the Ministry of Health has taken the decision to suspend the payment of the quarterly subvention to Swaziland Hospice at Home until all the issues raised in the audit report have been satisfactorily addressed.”

Zwane wrote that the Ministry of Health recognised fully and appreciated the role played by the organisation in offering the much needed services to the people of Swaziland, thus remained available to assist in ensuring that Swaziland Hospice at Home achieves its goals.
