MANZINI – Yesterday, the five suspects alleged to have murdered SMI Transport Manager Calvin Ryan, appeared in court for confessions.

The confessions begun at about 10am and the suspects were each called into the different chambers by court clerks. The confessions were before magistrates Sindisile Zwane, Mthokozisi Dlamini and Senior Magistrate Joe Gumedze.

While they were called into the chambers one by one, the other suspects remained at the switchboard room as there were reportedly space constraints. They would once in a while have a chat with journalists, cracking jokes, to a point that they requested water or drinks as they said they were thirsty.

While still enjoying the chats, journalists provided the suspects with soft drinks (king sizes of Coke) and fat cakes sold at the court building, which they ate under their jackets and sweaters, while covering their faces.

The confessions ended after 4pm. Journalists from all the media houses had been camping outside the chambers after they had been informed that the suspects would appear in court for a remand hearing.

After the last suspect had finished making his confession before Senior Magistrate Gumedze, they were led out of the court building by plain-clothes and uniformed officers from Sigodvweni Police Station.

Journalists ran after the suspects, who had their faces covered with jackets and hooded sweaters, from the chambers until they got to a white Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) van, which quickly whisked them out of the place to Sigodvweni Police Station.
