NHLANGANO – A spate of riots is sweeping across the Shiselweni region with Sokhonjiwe and Siyendle High Schools becoming the latest statistics after pupils resorted to violence yesterday morning.

The riots come after pupils became wild at Madulini High School last week, where they also smashed windows and pelted teachers with stones in protest of an aborted soccer match, where their sports teacher forgot to bring registration cards for the school players.

The demise of a school head teacher, who halted learning after he went missing with the school keys for weeks, has further thrown his former school into chaos. Learning was disrupted at Siyendle High School yesterday morning when pupils ran amok and smashed windows before they locked the school gates in protest of a decision by teachers to send them home to request for money to hire a bus to ferry them to the deceased head teacher’s funeral.

The message was related to the pupils during morning assembly, where they were told that they would have to wait for their food at break time before dispersing to their various homestead.

Instead, a group of pupils met outside the classrooms immediately after the morning assembly to question the logic behind sourcing money from their parents, when the school coffers were not reported to be dry.
An amount of E100 was deemed to be enough by teachers to cater for the transport expenses.

The teachers tried to reason with the pupils that everything to do with the school funds had been locked inside the head teacher’s office, since he went missing with the school keys about two weeks ago.
