MBABANE – Vincent Dlamini, a vocal unionist with TUCOSWA and NAPSAWU, is now in charge of the country’s roads.

He has since resigned from the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) to focus on his new job as the Government Chief Roads Engineer, taking over from Trevor Tshabalala.

He also asked to step down to concentrate on his studies as he pursues a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Dlamini, an engineer by profession, is now the head of the Roads Department in the country.
That means the former Secretary General of the National Public Service and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU) is now part of the management in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

His resignation from TUCOSWA has been met with mixed feelings among the unionists and political activists in the country, who claimed Dlamini had been ‘swallowed up’ by the Tinkhundla system of governance. Vincent Ncongwane, the Secretary General of TUCOSWA, had to intervene by issuing a statement of clarification in a private messaging group for unionists (WhatsApp).

Ncongwane warned: “We would like to caution those ill-informed commentators who have decided to go the distance in the social media to blacken his (Dlamini) name even about the promotion.”
If TUCOSWA were to accept the criticism levelled against its former National Organising Secretary, it would mean that Tinkhundla stalwarts were correct to regard protesters and political advocates as failures, he said.

Ncongwane said Tinkhundla stalwarts would be proven correct to say only people with no skills and future participated in the struggle for a better Swaziland. He further advised the unionists to accept Dlamini’s promotion.  The TUCOSWA secretary general said it would mean unionists working for government should not be promoted – and promotions would always be ideal for union members working for the private sector.
