MBABANE – The police, despite having a 24-hour operation outside the Chief Justice (CJ) Michael Ramodibedi’s house, missed an opportunity to affect an arrest on him.

Last week, Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba, Police Informaton and Communcation’s officer had indicated that police would pounce as soon as any of the doors opened. Last Friday, an opportunity had availed itself for the police to pounce on the CJ but they did not.
One of the CJ’s children, whose name will not be mentioned for ethical reasons, was seen leaving the house. A vehicle driven by the CJ’s driver entered the residence and picked Ramodibedi’s son.

When he returned, officers were seen opening the main gate to the residence as the CJ’s son alighted from the vehicle. A police officer was then seen instructing him to get back into the vehicle after journalists stormed the main gate leading into the judges’ complex.

Ironically, it was the only day a family member was allowed to leave the house to buy groceries – seeing as it was the CJ’s birthday on Friday.
The vehicle then drove to another area hidden from the view of prying journalists and was seen leaving the vehicle carrying two large plastic bags. It appeared he had gone shopping at one of the supermarkets.

Police officers did not seem to bother to enter the house with him as had been indicated earlier.
Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini has said the CJ’s wife and children were free to move out of the house to buy food in town.
At a press conference yesterday, he said, they were free to even visit other countries. They were also at liberty to roam around the country as well, the prime minister said.
