Strong winds threaten to blow marquee away

BUHLENI – A flawless evening, marking the birth of His Majesty King Mswati III 47 years ago, was marred by a sudden flash flood.

The howling winds, which threatened to blow the marquee that sheltered about 1 000 guests away during the garden party, damaged the upper part of the marquee on the south (Shiselweni direction) and north.

Shrieks of fear pierced through the air just when the King had cut his five-tier cake.
This was when a strong easterly wind blew heavily, shaking the main marquee while bringing down some marquees including the one that sheltered the gifts of the monarch.

The storm was accompanied by roars of thunder and lightning.
This was when the monarch, royal family and the invited guests were in full song singing the national sacred song, Inqaba Kancofula.
Before that, the King had been invited to cut his birthday cake by Princess Tsandzile, who was the master of ceremonies.

Princess Tsandzile is also the Minister of Home Affairs, a ministry responsible for hosting national events, which the King’s Birthday is part of.
The storm that threatened to spoil the happy ambience within the main marquee at the garden party started when Princess Sikhanyiso was belting out a gospel inspired tune; ‘My soul is hungry for you Lord’.

While Princess Sikhanyiso was performing the gospel tune, which had lasted over 10 minutes, the programme director, requested the sovereign to take to the podium where his birthday cake was displayed. In the same breath, Princess Tsandzile requested Princess Sikhanyiso to sing happy birthday to the King.
