CANADA GOVT DISTANCES ITSELF FROM KING’S JET
MAPUTO – The Canadian Government has dissociated itself from the court proceedings instituted by Shanmuga Rethenam against the Kingdom of Swaziland, which has resulted in the attachment of a state jet usually used by His Majesty the King.
In an exclusive interview, Shaun Barber, the Canada High Commissioner to Swaziland based in Maputo, Mozambique, said the court action against Swaziland initiated in his native country would not damage bilateral relations between the two states.
Barber said it was not a state versus State scenario or court action but an individual versus a State. Canada is the second largest country in the world, while Swaziland is one of the smallest countries even though it (SD) is not one of the 10 smallest nations in the globe.
Both countries are members of the Commonwealth. The Canadian high commissioner commented on the matter on Friday morning just before both houses of Parliament deliberated on the same issue.
Senate contemplated petitioning the Canadian Government over the attachment of His Majesty’s jet while members of the House of Assembly resolved to issue a joint statement on the matter.
The House of Assembly elected five members to craft the statement.
These are MP Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, Princess Ncengencenge, MP Marwick Khumalo, MP Owen Nxumalo and MP Thuli Dladla. The King’s jet has been attached in Canada where the Swaziland Government had taken it for routine maintenance.
The attachment was legitimised in Canadian law in a court process believed to have taken place behind closed doors. This was after Rethenam had initiated it.
