MANZINI – The Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA) has seized a luxurious Mercedes Benz belonging to a senator over unpaid taxes (customs duties).

Reliable sources revealed that the vehicle was seized on Wednesday by SRA officers while it was allegedly being driven by his son.
The vehicle is said to be owing taxes as it is South African registered.

Information gathered is that the vehicle was seized after police had stopped and searched during the ongoing Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) roadblocks held that are being held countrywide.

The operation by RSP is in conjunction with Southern Africa Police Chiefs Organisation (SAPCO) and Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA). SRA officers were called and the car was taken to the company warehouse situated in Matsapha.

When the politician was called, he did not want to comment further on the issue and stated that all foreign registered vehicles with due taxes were currently being seized by SRA.
“There are so many vehicles owing taxes that are currently being impounded by SRA, what is special about the one you are referring to,” the senator said.

RSP Deputy Information and Communications Officer Inspector Phindile Vilakati confirmed that vehicles were impounded during the ongoing roadblocks conducted by the police countrywide.

“The operation is for SAPCO and SRA duties and the police are getting rid of vehicles with outstanding or unpaid taxes. Most of the vehicles owe the SRA and are later handed over to them, the report for all the cars that have been sizes is currently consolidated and will be released to the office soon,” Inspector Vilakati said.
