LOBAMBA – Minister of Home Affairs Princess Tsandzile said the Somalian refugees who had been making headlines over the past weeks bayeyana (insolent).

The about 10 Somalians had, on many occasions, expressed dissatisfaction with their welfare in the country and wanted government to fix this.
They also refused to return to Malindza Refugee Camp and sometimes slept out in the open in the country’s capital. At some point they wanted to be sent back to their home country.

“These Somalians bayeyana, they are not suffering from anything in the country. Recently, they even said they wanted an audience with His Majesty King Mswati III,” said the minister.

She recalled that the group marched to the United Nations (UN) offices to complain about the hardship and poverty they faced in the country. They said they were not paid for working in the fields that fed the refugee camp. But the princess said the truth was that they were paid.

She went on to say the UN Refugee headquarters was called and informed about the Somalians’ behaviour. “We realised that it seemed these refugees had an agenda to ruin the country. The UN’s response was that Swaziland should do what it feels should be done to them. By moving out of their refugee camp they have altered their refugee status into illegal immigrants. We will continue to engage them,” the minister explained.
