MBABANE – Roland Rudd said he had quit politics and referred to it as a setback to his career.

Rudd yesterday told Judge Bheki Maphalala that he last participated in political activities about 13 years ago.
“I decided to quit after realising that my involvement in politics was a setback to my career,” said Rudd.

He said this in mitigation of sentence after he was previously found guilty of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Rudd, who has been languishing in custody for three years, further told the court that he was remorseful for his actions.
“The time I have spent in prison has taught me a lesson.

Pleading

“Prison is not a nice place and I am pleading with this court to be lenient when passing sentence,” he said.
He submitted that in the event the court gave him a second chance, he would consider being a motivational speaker.
“I also hope to write a thesis on criminal behaviour because while in prison, I was studying and reading a lot of books on various topics,” he said.

Rudd also stated that during his trial, he took time to apologise to one of the complainants.
He further asked the court to consider that he was a first offender and that he was engaged and about to get married.

His lawyer, Noncedo Ndlangamandla, asked the court to consider that Rudd was a first offender and that there were prospects of reformation.
She said in the event Rudd was given a second chance, he could be a useful member of the society.

“He has spent three years in prison and I plead with this court to consider an alternative method of sentencing.
