MBABANE – The Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) is expecting to host about eight members of the leadership of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) next weekend.

It was gathered that the organisation was keeping the arrival of their counterparts from South Africa a secret. Information gathered was that the federation fears that the visit could be botched by the State. An impeccable source within the organisation said: “We wanted to keep things under wraps until they have finished their business because we fear that they might be banned from visiting the kingdom.”

The source further said the COSATU members were expected in the country yesterday. However, the unionist could not come out clear on what led to the change of plans by the Sidumo Dlamini-led federation. “Actually they were supposed to be here today (Sunday),” said the source.
The source further stated that the entourage that would visit the kingdom was expected to encompass the federation’s president and other senior members.

The unionist noted that among the agenda of COSATU’s visit was to meet political prisoners languishing in a number of Correctional facilities in the country. However, TUCOSWA Secretary General Vincent Ncongwane said COSATU’s agenda was to exchange views and share their (TUCOSWA) experience as a federation. Ncongwane confirmed the anticipated visit.

He said they were not sure of the day the executive of COSATU would visit the country.
Ncongwane said: “We’ll play it by the ear as the week progresses.”

He could neither deny nor confirm whether the COSATU members would visit political prisoners. He said they were waiting to see their (COSATU) programme.
