236 DIVORCES IN 11 MONTHS
MBABANE – In what would come as a shocking statistic, it has been revealed that 236 marriages ended in divorce in the past 11 months.
These are statistics that are reflected in a report that was compiled by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The divorce statistics were recorded at the head quarters of the ministry and captured data from April 1, 2014 to February 28, 2015.
In the whole year, the last quarter had the least divorces as 36 were recorded while the second quarter reflected 70. The first quarter had 61dirvoces while the third quarter had 69.
Meanwhile, the annual performance report further revealed that there were 25 905 marriages recorded under two categories. There were 9 895 civil marriages, while there were 16 010 Swazi Law and Custom marriages.
Furthermore, to ensure accuracy in the statistics, the ministry initiated support service stations. These centres are located in eight health facilities and have departmental staff on a part-time basis.
“This is a move to ensure that every child is registered at birth and in the Swaziland National Population Register. It is also to make sure a child has a birth certificate and PIN,” the report read in part.
As part of the services it renders, the ministry provides training and examining of civil rites marriage officers, change of surname and also the granting of authority to marry in and outside the country.
The ministry trained 153 civil rites marriage officers whose names are published in the gazette as legal marriage officers.
