MANTENGA – Growing up from a small village in Ghana and going to school without any shoes on, UNAIDS Country Representative Dr Kwame Ampomah said he did not let his situation determine his future.

Dr Ampomah made these remarks during his retiring lunch yesterday at Mantenga Cultural Village where he was joined by UN staff and AIDS organisations.
Dr Ampomah will be officially retiring from his position and will leave office today.

He said what he turned out to be was the effort of his hard work and the grace of God.
“I have been to universities around the world and have also been to Europe and have worked for the UN organisation for 13 years,” he said.
Dr Ampomah said he was happy to celebrate his retirement and will not be leaving the country yet due to a number of reasons that include his children attending school here.
He reiterated his love for the country, having arrived here two years ago.

Dr Ampomah said he had worked in all countries in the Southern African region, save for Swaziland.
He said he requested to come and take over from the UNAIDS country representative after developing a keen interest to come and serve the nation. “My request was approved, hence I am here today,” he said.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr Simon Zwane said Dr Ampomah would be remembered for his symbolic love.
He thanked Dr Ampomah for selflessly dedicating his life to serve the Swazi nation for the period he did.
