COP SHOOTS HIMSELF DEAD INSIDE BANK
NHLANGANO - A police officer ended his life by shooting himself with his service pistol inside the Nhlangano branch of the Standard Bank yesterday.
The incident, which abruptly stalled operations at the bank, occurred just after 2pm, according to the police.
Customers and passers-by were left shocked after the incident.
Witnesses said some people left the place in haste, while others remained behind in order to see for themselves what had really happened.
“When you have a police officer pulling a gun on himself in public, it is very serious. You never know what will happen next. The moment you hear the gunshot, you think of running away but fear just engulfs you to the point that you just freeze,” said Bongani Simelane, an eyewitness.
deployed
The shooting happened at the Bulk Cash section of the bank, where the officer had been deployed, according to the financial institution’s Marketing Manager, Zitsile Dlamini, who confirmed the matter yesterday.
Siphesihle Dube was stationed at the KaPhunga Operations Support Service Unit (OSSU) base but was deployed at Nhlangano to beef up security during the back to school hype. While the motive has not been established yet, police officials believe it could have been a family-related problem.
Police officers based in Nhlangano were left perplexed after the tragic incident, because they were not familiar with Dube’s lifestyle since he was not stationed at the town.
“He used to come here in the morning and they would then leave in the afternoon back to their usual duty station. They usually come here to beef up security on hectic days, so we did not know much about him,” said a source.
Officers who were stationed with him at the financial institution yesterday were stunned when the officer suddenly drew his service pistol and fired a shot right inside his mouth.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific.
“He just blew off his brains, leaving everybody horrified. First it was the sound of the gunshot and then the macabre scene shortly after the explosion. There was blood everywhere,” said a witness.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, whatever that means. Condolences to his family, relatives and friends.
The huge concern is the safety of the public and the bank's staffers in this case, when the law enforcement agents armed with guns are capable of doing this. These officers are seen in many cases doing uncalled for stunts in the midst of people in business centres under the pretext of security enforcement which is not so necessary in our peacefull country. It also does not prove expert security but kusikisa/kusomisa. Guns are handled in hapazard fashion while drifting and zig-zagging their cars causing a spectacle for onlookers, yet dangerous. Last year, a member of the team almost fell in one of the cars while boarding it and almost got thrown out of the drifting car and held his guns roughly.
We are never safe in society. But this could have evil power behind it, considering the manner the guy took his life. Professionalise the security forces and ensure they get quality education and admission into the forces be of high standards to improve the negative reports.
But Magagula has tried his best. Siyamkhalela naye waMthombeni.
