SICKLY WOMAN DUMPS BABY AT SOS VILLAGE

MBABANE – A sickly woman dumped her eight-month-old baby at the SOS Children’s Village last week.
The unknown woman is said to have left her baby behind the village’s guardhouse.

According to the village’s Programme Director, Thokozani Maphalala, they tried in vain to locate the mother after they had discovered the baby.
He said they had seen someone they did not know in the area but some people told them they saw the mother in a kombi.

“We discovered the baby last Thursday. The mother entered the village and left him behind the guardhouse,” Maphalala said.
He said the mother left a note with the baby, asking them to take care of the baby, becuse she was unable to take care of him. Maphalala said the mother said she was sickly and her relatives had evicted her from their home so she also did not have anywhere to stay with the baby.

“In the note, the mother said the baby’s father had died. The baby was only left with the clothes he was wearing on the day as well as the note.  We hope someone will recognise the baby’s clothes and identify the baby’s mother,” he said.
Maphalala said they reported the matter to the Social Welfare Department as well as to the police.

He said the baby was taken to the hospital where tests were conducted and they found out that he was healthy. Maphalala said the police would investigate who the mother of the baby was. He said the baby was now in their care provisionally, until the investigations were completed.
“We have not formally admitted the baby to our care until the investigations are complete,” Maphalala said.

He said children belonged to the State and so it would be up to it to determine what happens to the baby.
