I QUIT THIS LIFE – CHESTER
MBABANE – “I quit this life.” These are the last known words written by Chester Thembinkosi Mhlanga, a Mbabane socialite who committed suicide recently.
Mhlanga was a civil servant employed by the Ministry of Agriculture as a draughtsman.
The above words were found on a suicide note that was found next to his dead body, which was hanging from a tree, in a thicket below Mobeni South flats in Mbabane.
His body was found on Wednesday, January 21 at about 11:45 pm.
He died at the age of 44.
Yesterday was his day of cremation and last testimonial event, where his friends and relatives mourned his death and remembered his life.
Martin Dlamini, who is Managing Editor of the Times of Swaziland Group of newspapers, was the chief mourner for Mhlanga’s friends at a memorial event that was hosted at the Mater Dolorosa Chapel in the capital city.
He said he knew Mhlanga from a young age and grew up with him.
He described the deceased as a humble man who from a young age was always jolly. He said Mhlanga was very sociable, lovable and popular among his peers. Due to his easy charm, he was a favourite in the female folk.
“He was the first person to have a girlfriend among us,” he said.
Dlamini also said he was a great sportsman in his heydays.
He was a great break-dancer and a karate specialist. “We shall miss our friend. To all of us here, your loss is our loss. Your pain is our pain,” he said.
Dumisani Mngomezulu, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Swaziland Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (SWADE), also said he missed Mhlanga.
Mngomezulu, who is Undersecretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, where Mhlanga worked as a draughtsman, is at SWADE on secondment.
He said recruited Mhlanga to work in the ministry.
