MBABANE – Thunderstorms are expected to hit the country during the Christmas holidays, the Swaziland Meteorological Services has predicted.

This was said by Senior Forecaster Dennis Mkhonta yesterday. Mkhonta said thunderstorms were expected from today up until Thursday.
He explained that the intensity of the thunderstorms could only be ascertained after they have formed.

The public has since been warned to avoid mountainous places during the course of the thunderstorms.
Mkhonta said people should also avoid riverbanks and other water bodies, including dams.

“Lightning usually strikes on high grounds so people should avoid going to mountains. They should also avoid water bodies,” Mkhonta said.
He said they should find shelter once the thunder starts, but not seek refuge under trees.
He said others will be tempted to go to swimming pools, but should take cover once the thunderstorm begins. He said the best place to be is in a house with doors and windows closed until the storm subsides.

“It is also better to be in a car with all windows and doors closed,” Mkhonta said.
He explained that the thunderstorms, which the country has been experiencing lately, including the one which was experienced on Saturday leaving about 90 homesteads destroyed, were normal in summer.

“The thunderstorms are normal summer weather, which is to be expected, thus people should take precautions,” he said.
He said thunderstorms were at their peak in December and January.
