MBABANE – Maize fields were the most affected during the weekend hailstorm. Baphalali Swaziland Red Cross Society’s Elliot Jele said the most affected regions were Shiselweni and Manzini.

He said in Shiselweni; Zombodze Emuva, Dilini and Gege were most affected while in Manzini; Mkhondvo, Langeni, Lobamba Lomdzala, Ludzeludze and Ekudzeni were ravaged by the storm.

He acknowledged that the organisation was still conducting assessments. These sentiments were also shared by Deputy Prime Minister Paul Dlamini. He said it was still hard for government to estimate the damage caused by the storm on Saturday afternoon.  “It’s still hard to project the damage,” Dlamini said.

He noted that a week does not pass without a disaster happening. He cited the recent mass demise of passengers who were killed when a Toyota Quantum they were in was swept away at the Mawelawela River in Tsawela, Mankayane.

“The country was still coming to grips with the accident when this happened. Our resources will soon be depleted. It’s really tragic,” he said.
On Saturday, about 40 homesteads were reduced to rubble as a hailstorm ravaged through Lobamba Lomdzala.

The constituency’s Member of Parliament (MP), Marwick Khumalo, said the hailstorm ravaged through his constituency at about 4pm and lasted not more than 20 minutes.

He said during the storm, about 38 homesteads were destroyed, leaving some families in the open. Khumalo said a structure within the constituency centre was destroyed with corrugated iron sheets strewn all over the area.
