GOVT’S MILLIONS ‘SITTING’ IN NEDBANK ACCOUNT

LOBAMBA – Millions of Emalangeni made from the sale of Nhlangano Sun Hotel over five years ago are still ‘sitting’ in an account at Nedbank Swaziland.

The money, kept in an account known as the Swaziland Tourism Development Company (STDC), at some point became a huge talking point in Cabinet.

This transpired during a debate on the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs’ Second Quarter Performance Report in Parliament on Friday.

One of the things the account will be remembered for was that it cost Macford Sibandze, former Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, his job. There were alleged irregularities concerning the handling of monies during the sale transaction. About E10 million was reportedly kept in the account at that time.

However, current Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jabulani Mabuza, upon enquiries from Senate Deputy President Ngomuyayona Gamedze, assured that the account still existed, along with its content.
“When will this money be returned to government? There was a time when it was said there was a credit card that withdrew money from this account,” said the senator.

The minister preferred to limit his response concerning the account to that it still existed and also had the money.
The hotel was sold and it eventually came to be known as the Nhlangano Casino Royale.

Two years ago, under its new name, the hotel made headlines when a manager and supervisor were suspended for allegedly assisting a syndicate that defrauded the hotel over E300 000. This was allegedly achieved through fiddling with the casino’s tables section in the gambling department.
