LET THE GAMES BEGIN

Sir,

First and foremost I would like to express my excitement on the 24 teams that were battling it out for the top six spots in the recently concluded Swazi Telecom Charity Cup voting exercise.

I am sure even the sponsor, Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) is beaming with pleasure as the teams managed to reach the target of one million votes, something that suggests that this will be a well-run event which is becoming bigger and better with each passing year.

Accolades must also be given to all the relevant stakeholders who joined hands to ensure that phase one of this charity event achieved its mission.

Underprivileged

As I type this many underprivileged people in most parts of this kingdom have been able to get the much-desired support courtesy of the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup.
Surely SPTC is changing the lives of many destitute Swazis, and hopefully other companies will follow the trend set by this parastatal.
One cannot help but also applaud the commendable job done by all the stakeholders who ensured that not only our football benefits from such endeavours but also the charity projects which have also been getting support.

That said, mine is not to heap praises on the people spearheading this most important event in our calendar but allow me to take you towards the upcoming football games of the 13th edition of the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup.
Oh yes the voting exercise is over, and now the focus will be on the six teams that will be battling it out in the field in a bid to get the E750 000 first prize at stake.

Hordes of football followers and the nation at large will surely fill up the Somhlolo National Stadium to watch what is expected to be a nerve-wrecking encounter, pitting defending champions, Royal Leopard against Manzini Wanderers.
Another interesting clash will be between capital city giants Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Sundowns.
This is the time where teams will get the opportunity to parade some of their new signings who they hope will take them to the promised land in as far as winning trophies is concerned.

Anticipation

There is no doubt the football followers are waiting breathlessly in anticipation for their teams’ games, which will be accompanied by lots of entertainment lined-up on the day.
Talking of Royal Leopard, the police ensemble who won the tournament in a spectacular fashion last year will be on course to repeat that feat again, and the question is; can they get past the formidable Weslians who need it the most?

Mbabane Swallows who are on the verge of rekindling the spirit and glory of the 2012/2013 season when they won a treble will surely come firing from all cylinders trying to dismantle the ambitious Kappa ensemble and the mind-boggling question is; can they really overcome Sundowns?

As the four teams will be giving the throngs of football followers their money’s worth on Sunday.
The duo of Green Mamba and Young Buffaloes will be eagerly awaiting the winners in the semi-finals slated for the next weekend. Interesting indeed!

We sincerely hope that all the qualified teams will come prepared to give the spectators sheer football artistry and of course bring joy to the Swazi nation.

Hooliganism

And of course, one cannot pen off without urging the local football authorities to ensure that they take every possible means to curb any form of hooliganism that might rear its ugly head to spoil this event.
At this juncture we cannot afford to have any form of bad sportsmanship behaviour that could subject innocent souls to life-threatening situations.

I have said it before and I say it now; let the environment be conducive for anyone to come with his or her family to enjoy the big day. Itak’seta waya waya, let the games begin!

Comfort Jele,
Hawane
