ABSENCE OF CRITICISM THREATENS DEMOCRACY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

What is democracy? It is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. So what could be considered as an enemy to this democracy?

The greatest threat to democracy is the absence of criticism. I believe that only Western countries employ this definition of democracy fully.   What is the opposite of democracy?

I think it is autocracy, which is when power is vested in a favoured minority as opposed to the majority. But many people prefer majority rule, why? The big problem with minority rule is that it is easy to abuse power as there are fewer checks and balances to safeguard or protect the majority.
I repeat; the greatest threat to democracy is the absence of constructive criticism!
