HOW MUCH TIME IS LEFT?

Throughout history, humanity has been ingenious about the marking of time. We have been ingenious and developed amazing systems to mark the passing of time. Have you ever noticed how many clocks we have in our homes? Have you ever counted the number of clocks we have in each room? There are clocks on our wrists, in our cars, phones, radio, TVs and along roads; and this is only a short list of where clocks are found. But for all of our genius at marking the passage of time we have never been able to discover the answer to this mystery; how much time is left?

Check your calendar; there are 12 months in a row. You can see the whole year in one place. You can see in June and you will be thinking, ‘Oh, we’re halfway done with the year’. Let me try and put it this way; what if January 1 represented the day you were born and December 31 represented the day of your death. What month is it in your life? How much time is left? Is it July for you? Is it October or is it December 30th? The truth of the matter is no one has a way of knowing how much time is left. This is the same thing with all our relationships, we have no idea. January first, the day we meet, December 31st, the day we’re providentially parted.

But do we really know what time it is? Do we really know how much time is left? The question is not about the time on our wrist watches, pocket watches, cell phones, or digital clocks. The question is about the time on God’s clock. To know how much time is left is a mystery that God holds in His hand, and He will not tell us. But what He does tell us in His word is that, it’s later than we think. Time is passing quickly. It will not be long before this present age, as we know it, will end. David wrote, in Psalm 90; “Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

The truth of the matter is that we don’t know how to do that. We don’t know how to measure the number of days we have left. And, therefore, the heart of wisdom for me is to assume that today might be my last day on earth, and that I should make the most of the hours I have today, to live them to the fullest and to the glory of God. The Bible says; “And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over, the day is almost here, so let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light.” This is a call for personal holiness. It is a call to resist the constant pull of the world, the flesh and the devil.

It is a call to understand the significance of every passing moment of every passing minute and day and year. A call to understand what God is calling on us to do and to be in this world.
The hour has come, for us to wake up from our slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over, the day is almost here. Time is running out. There’s less of it than we can imagine.
