ESWATINI HAS INSTITUTE OF INTERNAL AUDITORS

Sir,

I was surprised and excited at the same time when I read in this publication that there is a local chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). I have always known about the global institute and some regional institutes in countries such as Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. When I saw the Times of Eswatini of Monday, May 23, 2022 that Eswatini has also joined the Internal Auditors (IA) Awareness Month commemoration, I was left in awe. I was even impressed by the fact that this profession provided a career opportunity and job security for our children.

Accomplish

What also impressed me when I read the newspaper articles was that internal auditors were not the ‘police’ in an organisation as they are widely perceived. They are actually there to help organisations accomplish their objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.

Profession

Again, when I read the Times of Eswatini of Monday, May 30, 2022, I was impressed to see that the internal auditing profession was becoming popular among the youth. It was interesting to note from the articles that even our children were beginning to gain interest in internal auditing because it exposed one to a wide range of business processes in an organisation. Institutes like IIA Eswatini should consider visiting schools to talk to our children about internal auditing. We do have other professionals such as lawyers, engineers, architects, nurses and doctors who can also form such institutes. I would like to encourage other professional organisations to follow what IIA Eswatini did in celebrating the internal audit profession and to educate the public and other stakeholders about it.

Inspire

I know of the Swaziland Institute of Accountants (SIA) which is doing a good job in promoting the accounting profession. But, we need to know more about what they do and stand for. That will inspire our children to become accountants and the public at large to appreciate their role in society. To IIA Eswatini, please continue what you are doing, it is an inspiration to all.
