PLENTY RAIN, BUT NO WATER

Madam,

Kindly allow me space to express my thoughts about the recent events of the past two weeks concerning the lack of running water in some parts  of the capital city, Mbabane.

Do not get me wrong, I am not in any way going to start dressing down the Eswatini Water Services Corporation for this, but I was observing this from a view of how funny life is.

I find this amusing because the bits of Cyclone Eloise showers which we received covered the entire country and gave us plenty of water, especially from the Mbabane’s main supply dam, which is Hawane.

severe drought

The water was spilling all over. However, some residents of the city were taken back to 2015 or around there when the country was hit by severe drought and there was up to four to five days of water rationing in the capital city.

This one was understandable because there was absolutely no water to spare.

The EWSC then started making plan B, for any such future occurrences, but they clearly did not consider both sides of the coin to the effect that what exactly happens if we have too much water.

Thank God for the continuous rainfall though. Those with buckets, etc have been able to collect water on their doorsteps.

It was interesting to see some of those living in the suburbs of Mbabane also standing in long winding queues, waiting to get water from the water tanks provided by the water agency.

I did not really pay attention to the excuses given by EWSC, but I heard a lot of science about storage tanks and that water is actually drawn from the bottom to the top.

They then started issuing the rationing schedules, which sometimes they could not stick too.

Clearly, there is a lot of work that EWSC has to undertake to ensure the constant supply of water throughout the year, in all possible corners of the country.

not acceptable

It is just not acceptable that we can have so much rainwater, but no water coming out of the taps.

What I drew from this was EWSC saying too much rainwater is not good for us.

With the climate change up on us, it is high time we learn more innovative ways. What an interesting two weeks it has been for us.

Thank you.
