A HEART BIG AS HIS VOICE!

Sir,

I often prefer to celebrate people during their lifetime, where they can appreciate the positive things said about them. But in the case of Dr David Wasswa, it is still befitting that I pen down my memories of this fallen giant, who impacted everyone he came across. I am yet to hear someone say something negative about Dr Wasswa. Like many other people, I was not fond of visiting hospitals or clinics (I tend to self-medicate) but knowing that I would be assisted by Dr Wasswa made the hospital visits easier.

Assisted

He actually assisted in the delivery of my last born daughter, the now famous Apple. From the day I informed him I was pregnant, he had some parental advice to give me, without being judgemental of course. That’s how much he genuinely cared for the people who sought his medical opinion and services. “Aha, Cassandra, how are you doing today my dear,” was normally his opening line each time I went for a visit at his practice. Before he could even ask me why I had come to see him, he made it a point to ensure that I was at ease and relaxed. He would then give me updates about his grandchildren, what he did with them the past weekend, the mischief they got into, etc. Also, he would often remind me that I had a beautiful name (Cassandra). I got to learn that one of his daughters-in-law also had the same name.

Delivery

After the delivery of Apple, he made it a point to always ask me about her. I would bump into him at Pick N Pay or Shoprite Woodlands and the one thing he never omitted to ask was; “How is the little one doing (meaning Apple).” My response was always the same; “She’s fine Doc, how are you doing.” Before he could brief me about the latest happenings in his life, he would demand to see Apple’s picture from my phone. He would then remark about her beauty followed by many questions of what I was feeding her, who was taking care of her and the new things she had started doing.

Admire

Who wouldn’t admire such a man who went beyond his call of being a doctor to give free advice about life in general? Who wouldn’t want to be associated with such greatness?
I would often ask him when he planned to retire and the response I got was; “Ehh Cassandra, do you think I’m that old?” Then he would crack into a laugh that almost caused the whole room to reverberate due to his loud voice. But that was his genuine self; he laughed, he loved and he cared. We would often talk about him with Dr Ncube (from the Mbabane Clinic) and he would often tell me how closely he worked with Dr Wasswa. Our hearts may be at pains with your departure Doc, but we hold very fond memories of you. Do charm the angels with your voice! Till we meet again.
