OUR LAND TENURE SYSTEM

 Sir,

It is imperative that we take stock of where we are coming from and where we are going. Our government needs to come to the party by ensuring that there is an enabling environment and that the glaring impediments to achieving the country’s vision are removed.

One of the most valuable resources that we have as a country is our land. The current land tenure system does not encourage economic activity particularly in rural areas. If we are to avoid migration from our rural areas to urban areas, we need to create economic activity in rural areas and in order to do that we need to review the obtaining land tenure system.

Address

To address the land tenure system, government needs to look at what would best suite our people, is it the continued practice of our people living in tinkopolo and when they retire they forego all the luxuries of having clean and running water, proper sewer reticulation and decent houses? In my view, the ideology of tinkopolo is a colonial concept that we should be ashamed we are still retaining 52 years into our freedom. If we were to be bold enough as a country and do away with this colonial concept, we would also be freeing our companies so that they concentrate on what they know best, their core function and not maintaining houses and other related infrastructure.

As a country that is relatively blessed with reasonably sized rivers, it is important that we make an effort to harness this critically important resource. If we have water, our food security situation should significantly improve for the better owing to the fact that most of our regions have warm to hot weather throughout the year, conditions which are favourable to our stable crop, maize and other crops.

The levels of acute poverty would be significantly reduced if we focused on providing sufficient water to farmers. Our current practice of relying on rainfall will not improve our food security situation; with the advent of global warming the situation can only get worse.

Urge

Again I want to urge government to make a concerted effort towards ensuring that the pre-requisite environment for enhancing economic activity is set up as a matter of urgency, not only for the declared industrial zones but in rural areas as well.
